Behind the song

The loophole in the Devil’s bargain.

This song is inspired by the Polish legend of Pan Twardowski, a sorcerer who bargains his soul to the Devil for wealth, knowledge and supernatural power.

Believing himself safe because the Devil may claim him only in Rome, he is eventually tricked inside an inn bearing that name. After calling on the Virgin Mary, he escapes Hell but is left stranded on the Moon.
