This song is inspired by the medieval legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and the mysterious disappearance of 130 children in 1284.
It focuses on the darker early tradition rather than the later rat-catcher tale, imagining the Piper as something possibly inhuman and asking where he came from, where he led the children, and whether his song was a path to Hell.
