Behind the song
Beneath the walnut tree.
This song is inspired by the folklore of the Janare of Benevento, southern Italian witches said to gather beneath a legendary walnut tree, use magical ointments to fly through storms, ride horses at night and oppress sleeping victims. The song imagines an ordinary young woman being initiated into their hidden world, gradually surrendering her fear and humanity until she becomes part of the legend herself.
