This song is inspired by the Pendle witch trials of 1612, one of the most notorious witchcraft cases in English history. It follows the atmosphere of accusation surrounding Alizon Device, Demdike, Chattox, the gathering at Malkin Tower and the testimony of young Jennet Device, tracing how fear, old grudges and suspicion helped carry the accused toward Lancaster and the gallows.
